Grimm0614's Review of Gregory Optic 58 Pack

Overall, this is a very good pack. It's lightweight, very comfortable and can hold a large volume and substantial weight pretty well.

It's not the lightest pack you can find, but it strikes a good balance between weight and comfort.

The compression straps and some of the buckles do not seem very burly and I have some concerns about long term durability. That said, I have not had any issues so far. I do wish the compression straps running along the side of the pack were a thicker single strap, rather than the zig-zag thin strap which was used. This isn't overly bothersome, but I feel the pack could have been better with this.

The ability to pare down the pack by not using the top lid and rain fly is a nice option. Allows for more volume when needed, but when traveling fast and light, it's also easy to accomplish.

I like the large mesh pockets for water bottles and drying wet gear. The water bottle pockets are a bit awkwardly placed and I'm not able to easily retrieve and replace the bottle while hiking. This could not be an issue for some people depending on how the pack fits them and/or what water bottles they use.

The hip belt pockets are large enough to fit any kind of snack, chap stick or other accessory in them. I am also able snugly fit my iPhone 7 in a case, but I don't think a larger phone than that would fit easily.

The straps allow you to strap a sleeping pad or other items to the bottom of the pack. That said, they're not overly large so you're not going to be able to fit anything much larger. The top lid is technically a floating lid, but it wouldn't hold much more than some spare layers you need quickly. Definitely not large enough for a foam pad, bear canister, etc.

There is a seam which runs along the lumbar pad which is awkwardly places. I have not had issues with it, but have seen others complain of this. It's most likely based on how it fits each person individually and you won't know until you try it on.

Quality of the pack seems very good. This isn't a bomber pack and I wouldn't treat it as such, but for the majority of backpacking trips, I think it should hold up very well. I would expect it to hold up to some light off trail use or bushwhacking, but nothing too major. I wouldn't use it rock scrambling or in slot canyons as the mesh would probably get tore up pretty easily.

Overall, I recommend this pack. It's a good one pack fits most type of item. Lightweight, comfortable, enough features and durable enough. You're not getting the best of any category, but it's pretty good all around.
