Most Helpful Negative Review Hanwag Alaska GTX
I ordered a pair of these in wide and they have the narrowest toe box I've ever tried on for a EE width. The toe of the boot also tapers to somewhat of a point which makes the toe box narrower. My true size is a 10 1/2 E and the Hanwag's in a 10 1/2 EE were too narrow. They are nice boot but just ar...

Never again Hanwag

by Josh, from CO, United States Written on October 13, 2021
Summary: all soles fall off after appr. 7 years, customer service disastrous (response after two weeks) denying any responsibility for their faulty work, demanding address in Germany for assistance, boots are super heavy (old fashioned designs).
After the sole of my Alaska GTX came off after 7 years (sole medium worn), I sent my boots to Hanwag for resoling asking for sole for alpine trekking (snow and rocks). The sole they put on slips terribly on snow, I even had an accident with 5 weeks healing. Hanwag rendered my boots dangerous and so useless. Customer service denies any responsibility, makes vague guesses and demands an address in Germany to deal with my issue.
Beyond this, Hanwag insists on heavy leather boots – competition makes much lighter boots with better durability. My other Hanwag, Banks got a hole in it when I mildly kicked into a root. So I gave away my useless Alaska GTX for free, scrapped the Banks too, and bought a Scarpa Zodiac Plus instead.
Pros:
  • Durable leather upper
Cons:
  • everything else

Hanwag Alaska GTX wide

by Lou, from ID, United States Written on March 13, 2018
Very well-constructed. Soles are aggressive but still grip very well on Rock. This is a stiff boot very close to or as stiff as a mountaineering boot. I have a hard time with boots due to my flat feet. These boots were designed for the wides to be wider at the midfoot. The wide fits very well and I have no arches. The boots are heavy compared to a hiking boot butt are actually lighter than most boots of the same style. Highly recommended
Best Used for:
  • Great backpacking boot for heavy loads and rough Terrain

Quality Hiking/Mountain Boots

by Galatians614, from NY, United States Written on February 16, 2018
These boots are very well made, rugged yet comfortable. Two sayings to remember when buying boots: 1.) Your boots are the most important piece of equipment for the outdoors. 2.) You get what you pay for. So, don't cheap out on your most important piece of equipment!

Hanwag Alaska GTX Backpacking Boots

by happy customer, from OR, United States Written on January 16, 2018
Have two pairs they have worn as only a champion made boot could do for two years now, though the soles are worn 80% they they have kept the shape and stiffness to protect the ankles in up and down walking in the mountains and hilly country and work in the shop.

This boot has held up much better than than the other brand I used for 20 years, oh they were a good boot, but the uppers were shot along with the rubber rands on the boot, no thinking about resoles ha.

Han Wang, sounds Asian, but they 100% German quality, nothing broke on the boot and the rear heel cup did not wear through. Always try to use Merino wool socks too. Dump any brand boot inserts and get some Spenco inserts too.

If you spend any time in the mountains, you have also been on the search for THE boots for you.....These are the ones for me. Im on my 3rd pair in 12 years. Punishing days elk hunting in Colorado High Country to slogging through bogs and high alpine in the Yukon and Alaska, these have been through it all with me. I....Love....Them. There. I said it.

I really wanted to love these boots...but

by Sylvan, Written on June 23, 2017
I really like Hanwag boots and have a pair of their Tashi boots that fit me like a glove. These boots have amazing craftmanship and are hand made in Germany. I loved everything about them except the fact that they have a wider fit then the Taahi boots and caused my heels to slip. I have a narrow low volume heel with a wide toe area and and low to normal arches and overall a low to normal volume foot and like snug fitting boots that lock my heels into place. these boots just did not fit my narrow heels, and are my biggest boot disappointment because I love everything else about these boots. If they fit, I'd swear by these boots since Hanwag's are so nicely made and these boots looked and felt amazing (other then my heel slip issue). Alas, I had to return these boots because I know for me that heel slippage equals blisters and floppy walking in the mountains. If you have normal to high volume heels, then I highly recommend these boots, there is not really much of any boots that are made as nicely as Hanwag boots. I ended up buying the Crispi Wyoming boots and the Scarpa Zanskar boots, both of them fit my feet perfectly.

Hanwag Alaskan GTX just buy them!

by Al, Written on March 15, 2017
Own many brands of high end boots several Lowa, Kenetrek, Zamberlan Tofane.
The Hanwags were the most instantly supportive and comfortable of all and price was lower than most in my boot collection. I am a 12 Medium and these fit perfectly in size 12 M.
Usually have trouble with 7 inch high boots chafing my legs but these are kid glove leather lined = super comfortable.
Built very solidly like climbing in a heavy duty ORV -you feel confident facing anything.
Good balance between stiffness/support and comfort. The ball bearing lower laces allow easy tightening of this area and is a great feature.
Love these boots. Just buy them!

Unbelievable boots!

by Jon A., Verified Owner from CO, United States Written on August 14, 2016
Unbelievable boots, after first hike through medium technical terrain, they felt like I have hiked in them a dozen times. I would recommend these boots for anyone that plans to hunt or hike in any mountain setting.
