Grey Bear's Review of Kahtoola K-10 Hiking Crampon

I absolutely love my new Kahtoola K10's! They have just the right amount of bite with 3/4" spikes and they are made of high carbon Steel, 4130, which is the same alloy we use in the aviation world if we have to spec out steel for structural strength. I purchased these crampons specifically because this coming summer I will be backpacking the PCT Southbound and there is a real possibility that these Kahtoola K10's may be my best friends! I am bringing Micro spikes also, but if there are an absence of boot prints before me, I will trust these K10's to get me through the steep slopes that on the north faces will still perhaps be snow covered and consolidated.
As for getting these crampons adjusted properly, Kahtoola suggests you set them up fully adjusted before you get out there in the cold! So heeding this Sage Advice, it only took me about a half hour of reading then doing to get them dialed in. Their instructions are short, to the point, and well illustrated! The most time was spent installing the snow release skins over the spikes on the bottom side of each crampon. This is done only after you have adjusted the crampons to fit your boots or trail runners. They must be stretched on over the spikes and they are tight! But yes, do this now in the warmth of the indoors, because it will be a real wrestling match to try and get them pulled onto the crampons if they are stiff from cold temperatures! Once they are all adjusted you can unbuckle them and they will always be ready to go on that pair of footwear! I am an older backpacker, so I wear boots because I need the ankle support. The Regular size Kahtoola's fit my size 10 Merrell Moabs perfectly! For those of you wearing trail runners, there is a cool feature called a Lace Hook and it will prevent the rear strap from slipping off the tongue of your low topped footwear and rubbing uncomfortably on your ankles! Anyway I am very satisfied with the quality and value of these crampons and highly recommend them for you to get a grip!
