Rainbird's Review of Marmot Alassian Featherless Jacket - Men's

Let me say that my review is going to differ vastly with some of the reviews that claim some level of warmth for this jacket that is just not realistic. It makes me wonder who is writing some of these reviews and why. That being said..............
Nice looking piece, heavier than comparable down, but not extremely or excessively so. No geese or ducks were killed making it. No stitched seams in the baffles is good, but only time will tell if the insulation finds a way to migrate. It only has two hand pockets, which is less than desirable, but not a deal breaker. Perhaps they will figure out how to integrate more pockets with the new insulation and no stitch baffling. Overall I like the jacket very much (simple clean lines), but the lack of an additional pocket and the fact that I have not had the piece long enough to evaluate it fully get it four stars. Now, on a quite serious note, I want to mention this jackets real potential. The descriptions from Marmot, and on other sites (which often just copy what Marmot has said ), are misleading to a fairly substantial degree. This is most certainly not a " heavy-weight cold weather jacket." It is actually a mid-weight moderately cold weather jacket. One first hand look at it and you will know it is a mid-weight piece. Trying it on only confirms that it is a mid-weight piece (there isn't enough insulation & it has no hood). I don't know why they are billing it as a heavy-weight. Sure, it's good for winter hiking (walking the dog) or other lightly aerobic activity in "moderately" cold weather. Fine, for winter casual wear like house to car and car to office. Fine, for around town or a winters night out. Great for low/no aerobic activity at temps 20+ degrees (F). It might also do well in moderate to highly aerobic pursuits paired with a light or mid-weight base layer for cross-country skiing say at -10 or -15 degrees, or snowshoeing in cold temps. However, it is not good for standing/sitting around "ice fishing" at 10 degrees ( or colder). It is not good for wildlife photography at 15 degrees with a 10mph wind ( or more ). It is not good for a low aerobic hike at -5 or 5 or 10 degrees ( or even 15 for that matter). I am saying unless you are adding aerobic activity to the equation this jacket is only good from 20 degrees and up. I'm certain it would do well in 40 and 50 degree temps, say on St. Paul Island in the Pribilofs in summer, or just a cold spring day. I like the jacket, I like no harm to animals and I would recommend it, but know what you are buying is not a heavyweight.
Best Used for:
  • Casual non technical pursuits
  • Moderate cold
Would Recommend: Yes
