Perfect Layering jacket for Mont Bell

by KarlosJ83, Gear Expert from UT, United States Written on July 18, 2009
I used this jacket in below zero conditions last December on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and on the hike down. With a peak shell over it I was never cold. Wind was over 40 MPH in the worst snow storm in 40 years in northern AZ. Forget the need for heavier down jackets with a hard or soft outter shell this works like a portable furnace. It is very light a comes with its own compression ba

I initially ordered a small. I wear a 37R coat and the small Patagonia fits me well. The small was way too tight and I ended up with a medium. This is a perfect mid layer for alpine backpacking and is exceptionally warm and cozy for just 14oz. Nothing else like it for the price.

Alpine Light Down parka

by Greg G., from WI, United States Written on January 11, 2015
I am 5'4" 140 lbs 38 in chest 30in waist and I got a medium.I can layer a base and mid layer under and a size large she'll over if needed. Was able to use the Parka in below temps and wind chills in the 20 below. It blocked the wind very well and with layering It was very effective.Very light and packs small.I take it in my pack to use snow shoeing when I stop and need to take the chill off.

This is the one I kept

Compared this to the Rab Microlite and Montane Featherlight. The Alpine light was lighter, warmer, fit better and cheaper...the clear winner.

the down is not evenly distributed

by peter guy, Written on December 5, 2014
It is a quality jacket, light weight and durable, however I was greatly disappointed by the amount of down filling in the back of it. The back has almost no down in it. I noticed another review with the same complaint. I can feel the cold. I think it's a good choice for a light weight jacket, but I think you would need more layers or another better jacket to supplement it with in colder weather. I was cold in 40 plus Fahrenheit weather wearing this just because the back has almost no down at all. the back tubes all have different amounts of down in them. This is how it came new out of the sealed bag.

Love this Down Jacket

by Scott, from CA, United States Written on November 2, 2014
I bought this for a thru-hike of the JMT, and was very impressed. It was definitely one of my favorite pieces of gear.

This is extremely comfortable and warm, and I have had no issues with durability yet. It is also pretty light; including the stuff sack mine weighed in at 14.9 oz. My sleeping bag does not have a hood, and wearing this at night with the hood on worked great for the coldest nights. I put clothes in the stuff sack at night and it worked as a pillow; I know a lot of people aren't a fan of needing a stuff sack but that use made it ok for me. I'd highly recommend this jacket.

Excellent Lightweight Packable Parka

by Trout Bum, Written on December 12, 2013
I've had this parka for two weeks and already put many hours on it. I've been fly fishing in it in 25 degree weather and hammock camping in the same conditions, and I never took this thing off. The parka is incredibly warm for the weight and even more incredibly high quality. The zippers are all incredible and I've had one small down particle leak out so far, but that's it.

Overall I would highly

Warm jacket without weighting you down

by Ikanuba, from FL, United States Written on September 10, 2013
Bought this jacket as my outer layer when we hike the AT trail. Although I haven't used it hiking yet, I have used it in cold weather and it's very warm and yet very light-weight. Compresses down nicely to fit in my pack when not needed. This is a great jacket at a very decent price.

Jacket fits smaller then one would think

by Cedar the bear, Written on September 10, 2011
The jacket was worn on a summer backpacking trip in the Tetons. It was just the right type of jacket for the mountains, and it was very light weight. The best thing about the jacket was the light weight, but it was definitely too tight.
