Most Helpful Positive Review Absolutely awesome shoes
out of all the gore tex boots I've owned...this is hands down the best
Most Helpful Negative Review They appear to be very nice boots, but the right boot simply doesn't fit.
I was really looking forward to purchasing these, got them at a fair price (given the apparent reputation for comfort, quality and durability) and was excited when they arrived. Well...I tried them for less than a week, wearing them to work five days and trying them during short walks around the nei...

Hard to beat hand-made Italian boots!!!

by Bubba, Verified Owner from SC, United States Written on May 21, 2024
This is the second pair of Zamberlan GTX boots I've bought over the last 8 years. I put well over 3,000 miles on the last pair I bought and they lasted me nearly a decade before I finally retired them. I wish I had taken a picture before I tossed them. The soles were slick, the leather on the toe boxes was split and they looked like they had been dragged behind a tractor trailer from coast to coast. Despite the condition, they were the most comfortable boots I had ever worn. Needless to say, I didn't pay attention to the "care" instructions when I took them out of the box.

I unpacked my new Vioz GTX's about a month ago and slipped them on. It was like I had just been reunited with my childhood best friend! I usually wear between 11.5-12 and opted to go with the 11.5's since I lost about 30 lbs since my last pair (now 195 lbs and 6'-0"). The size was perfect and still allowed some room for thicker socks. They were comfortable right out of the box but were just a bit on the stiff side (as expected). I've been doing short hikes 3 times a week in preparation for the Tour du Mont Blanc which I'll do in June (2024). They have already loosened up a bit and are forming to my feet a little more each time I wear them. I have been switching from thin to double layered socks and the boot laces adjust accordingly with no hint of rubbing or blisters. The support is amazing and the shape of the sole make ascending and descending trails easier. Some people report that these ar...

Awesome Sturdy Hiking boot with tremendous foot & ankle support

by SGM, Verified Owner from UT, United States Written on August 6, 2023
Ok, this is a gem of craftsmanship. A well made boot that will buffer your feet from a heavy backpacking load and soak up the impacts of harsh rocky terrain. They are a bit heavier than the current superlight boots, although these are by no means heavy, the little bit of extra weight is worth it. The back ankle cradles your achilles well preventing slippige that may result in blisters and it fit my wide foot (I got wides) very well. It has great traction and holds well on rocks gong downhill. i can feel them getting more an more terraqin feel as they break in. Make sure you wear them around for short hikes to break in the leather. All in all, this reminds me of an l=old style craft boot with modern materials, the best of both worlds....
Pros:
  • Well desiigned, impact reducing, comfortable,
Cons:
  • A bit on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for
Best Used for:
  • Rough hiking trails, backpacking with heavy load

AVOID - BOOTS HAVE DEFECTIVE SOLES

by Smily, from NC, United States Written on July 23, 2023
The boots have Vibram soles that are wholy defective and will fail and break apart. This catastrophic defect in their soles will occur when the treadlife
only has 20% wear and you will have to get them re-soled with a different type of sole. Zamberlan will lie to the customer and accuse them of causing the failure.
Zamberlan is aware of this defect and they will not stand behind
their product. We do not recommend any purchases of any Zamberlan products based on their poor customer service and anti-consumer policies.

Great boots, didn't fit

by oldmansknees, from PA, United States Written on October 14, 2022
These are really very well made boots, beautiful. Alas, too loose in the heel and too tight around my forefoot (but not the toes).Size was accurate.
Most consistent fitting boots for me are Lowa, some others are hit-or-miss for me in their line up (Scarpa, Salomon, Garmont, La Sportiva, Asolo). That's probably not much help.... Try these, if they fit they're as well made as it gets nowadays! And, Campsavers rocks and makes it easy to return if they don't work out. Kudos, guys!
Pros:
  • Very well made
Cons:
  • they have to fit you
Best Used for:
  • light backing

Investment Worthy

by Terrapin Trekker, from NC, United States Written on January 30, 2022
After years of relying on mid-level boots for hiking, backpacking, and camping, I decided to research the next level up with a goal of a sturdy (read full leather), old-school, well crafted, long lasting pair of boots. The Zamberlan 996 Viox GTX won out over several others based primarily on the many positive reviews on multiple sites. Yeah, they're a bit heavier than other hybrid models, but I'll gladly suffer a few extra ounces for great fit, comfort (especially the footed insole and roomy toebox), and longevity. These remind me of the full leather Raichle's of my early outdoor years. They're understandably stiff out of the box, but they've already molded comfortably to my feet after just a few days, and I appreciate the security of the stiffness above my ankles. They are beautifully crafted with thoughtful details like a mid-foot lacing lock. The Vibrams are sufficiently aggressive with great downhill heel breaking. Zamberlan does an outstanding job of preconditioning their leathers, inspiring me to care for these for years to come. It's too early for a final verdict, but I'm thrilled thus far with this investment.
Pros:
  • Sturdy
  • waterproof
  • Well crafted
  • Resoleable
  • Reputation
  • Positive Reviews
  • Full Leather
Cons:
  • Weight
  • Limited Toe Abrasion Protection
Best Used for:
  • Backpacking
  • snow
  • Steep Hiking
  • Varied Terrain
  • Cold Conditions

Don't slip and slide!

by CampSaver Customer, from CA, United States Written on September 26, 2021
These hiking boots are the best!
I have lots of steep hills and sand where I hike.
The treads on these boots prevent me from slipping going down. That's why I bought them in the first place; and they do work.
Pros:
  • Treads will keep you safe
Cons:
  • NONE
Best Used for:
  • Hiking, back packing, or just plane walking.

Superb Comfort

by Kirk, from VT, United States Written on December 31, 2020
I am picky and find it difficult to find very comfortable hiking boots as I have odd shaped and old feet :) I've been through Scarpa's (they're excellent), Oboz, Vasque, Salomon, I can go on. The Zamberlan's are without question the most comfortable hiking boots I have found to date in over 40 years of hiking. They fit my size 12.5 feet (bought a 13) and have proven to be very warm, comfortable after a first day 5 mile trek and continue to be after adding mileage over some difficult fall/winter terrain in the Vermont mountains.
Pros:
  • comfort, achilles support, grip in the wet/snow, durability, versatility
Cons:
  • NONE
Best Used for:
  • walking to heavy backpacking.
