I take a trip to the Boundary Waters every year. In the past, I've slept on a thermarest that was 1 3/4 inch thick. Lying on your back that's fine, but I think I, like most people, sleep on their sides and switch sides through the night. That 1 3/4 inch pad was not enough for side sleeping, so I started researching. Yes- expensive, but this pad is excellent. I'm sure that with the memory foam it's "too bulky" for a minimalist backpacker, but I think it's worth it. A good night's sleep is crucial. Packed it's smaller than my thermarest is. This pad is just nice- it's actually a pad that kept me off the ground and cushioned me nicely. I also liked the microfiber cover on it, as it prevented me from sliding in the night, as in the Boundary Waters the tent sites are never completely flat. In the past my nylon bag would slide easily against my other pad, and I'd end up half off it in the night. Also this Nemo pad was much quieter. The built in pump works well. Beats nearly passing out using your lungs. Get the Nemo pillow too. PERFECT combination. Like I said- not cheap, but quality that is worth it.
