Although you could easily put some olive oil in a little plastic bottle and carry that with you, this is simply more convenient. There's zero risk of any leaks, you don't have to pack another bottle around, and it's actually some surprisingly tasty olive oil.
I carried these 6 little packs during a 700 mile section hike and they definitely came in handy when making couscous, rice, or noodles.
This is a pretty delicious dessert, and it's a nice change of pace compared to just having a chocolate bar or some cookies at the end of the day. I would use a little bit less water than specified but other than that it's easy to make. Pour, stir and wait.
