Mad Rock Lefesaver
I read a few reviews and decided to take a chance on this device since I had not met anyone who had used it before. I can say that after using it for a few months, I like it a lot! In fact, I like it better then the gri-gri 2. It's super small and light, is very easy to feed out rope on lead and catches falls and lowers very well.

I love it!
This is a great belay device because of it's compact size, low-weight, and assisted-braking function! Using the lever to lower your climber takes a few tries to get used to because of the small size of the device but after a few tries you'll figure it out. Gets the Functions just like the GriGri but weighs much less. I highly recommend this device if you're trying trim some weight off of your rack and you're looking for an assisted-braking device.
Pros:
- Lightweight
- compact
Cons:
- Lowering lever is a little sticky at first
Best Used for:
- sport
- trad
- Top-rope
- Multi-pitch

Better than the grigri
Safety of the grigri, operate like an ATC. No more short roping or need to push down on the leaver when feeding rope quickly.

Good belay device, but not without flaws
The mad rock lifeguard is an assisted braking belay device. Mad rock designed it as a lighter and smaller device compared to others in its class, like the petzl grigri.
Rope handling is very similar to the grigri, except it pays out slack much better.
While an overall good device, I cannot give it five stars because it wears down my carabiner. This hasn't happened with the grigri, but has taken just 2 uses of the lifeguard to make apparent.

better than gri-gri for lead belaying
This is essentially a gri-gri that requires a larger force to activate the camming (braking) mechanism, which is why it *almost* pays out slack like an ATC. You don't have to manually override the camming mechanism, but you do need to pull the leading end gently and it needs to be parallel to the brake end. Still much better than lead belaying with the gri-gri. I also like that it's much lighter than the gri-gri, and pretty to boot! Would recommend for sport climbers.
