I liked the idea to light a fire with a piston. The piston itself is well thought and made and comes with spare rings. But when it comes to make an ember, it will not do so unless in very specific conditions. I have tried many materials such as cotton (very thin) , tobacco, coal, paper, thin dry wood, and others but no one managed to ignite. The only thing that ignited was char cloth. Beautifully machined device with key features included. I had to find the critical factors to get quasi reliable ignition; the little things are important. Tinder must be DRY (less than 5 pct moisture); charcloth seems to work best. Tube must be clean and piston orings lightly lubed;no excess. Test that the piston moves very freely with only air compression resistance. Holding cylinder strike down hard onto a wooden object so that piston bottoms out. Quickly pull piston out to check for ember.
Practice and find what works for you.

The little Vulcan Fire Piston is a , well made , back up system to get a hot ember to start a fire when everything else fails , or to use all the time.
The one I purchased is in my backpack as a emergency fire starter. It is a compact unit , light weight and with the storage area in the cap I have plenty of material ( Stone Tinder , Original ) to get embers with by using the fire piston. Everything is in one complete , compact , water proof package.

I received the Vulcan Fire Piston in the mail promptly after placing the order. I had prepared char cloth in advance and was able to start a fire on my second attempt after watching the youtube video. Thanks for the great product!!!!
