Good socks
Breathability is the name of the game for the Smartwool PhD. Unmatched moisture management means your feet won't get wet or soggy, which equates to lower likelihood of developing blisters or chills. The PhD is made up of 62% merino wool, meaning the moisture-wicking abilities are excellent.

Excellent hiking socks
These are my go-to socks for long hikes and backpacking trips. They provide great cushion and protect my toes when hiking down the mountain. Great for outdoors. Love these socks. Thick but not too thick. Great to run in also.

Great value especially when they are on sale.
I found these socks on sale a couple weeks ago and decided to try them out. I've been a darn tough guy for years - mostly due to their warranty - but I can say that Smart wool are just as good. Very comfortable and the elastic at the top didn't cut off circulation to my rather large calves.
Pros:
- made well
- Often go on sale
Cons:
- Can be a little expensive
Best Used for:
- Hunting boots
- Hiking boots

Smartwool always hits the mark
Great socks - some nice new color combinations, comfy, nice sole padding for hiking or just strolling the mall. They stay up well and best of all they last practically forever. I especially like the PhD line.

Not too good for below
Not too good for below -5ËšC, but that's only if there's snow around.

Feel like silk - wear like iron
I’m used to wearing wool socks when hiking for their moisture wicking properties, as well as their ability to stay fresh smelling after a few days on the trail. Previously I would wear silk sock liners to provide a slick smooth moisture wicking layer to reduce the chance of blisters. With these Smart Wool Phd socks, I no longer need the silk. These sock are light, very smooth, breathe well and wick very well. Minor pilling, but a great addition to my hiking kit nonetheless!

New Smartwool
The term they don't make them like they used to is applicable to these socks. They were rated high so I bought them and I am a long time Smartwool sock user. These phD socks shrink after washing, they are not as thick as my old medium hikers nor do they have the arch support I remember. Oh well, I hope they last - wanna bet?
