Good Food

Written on May 05, 2014

This has been my favorite Mountain House meal for over 15 years now. For best results, I recommend letting the food rehydrate a little longer than the directions recommend. If you don't the beef chunks may end up being a little rubbery. Also, shake the bag before pouring in water and make sure you stir well before sealing the bag. There's usually a thickening agent at the bottom of the bag that yo

Good Value

I got the 6" version which is actually 6-3/8" by 27-1/2". Not as long as the screen that came with my Windpro stove, but will easily handle most small/medium sized pots. The edges are nicely crimped and you can customize it to fit your pots & stoves. It doesn't come with a 2nd piece for the bottom of your stove head - I'm using a round cut of BBQ foil for that.

You'll Need for Fast-fly Mode

Written on May 05, 2014

You'll want this footprint to setup your tent in fast-fly mode. Note it fits loosely on the poles. When using the tent body, I swap the pole grommets of the tent and footprint so the footprint won't fall off the poles if the tent is picked up. The 2013 footprint has color coding on the grommet loops to match those on the 2012-2013 tents. But the 2014 footprint doesn't match 2013 tents (though it w

2013 Spork is a Winner

Written on May 05, 2014

This year's version has a much improved locking mechanism. Unfold to lock, pinch in on the handle to unlock. At 8", I like how its just long enough to reach into the bottom of dehydrated food pouches. Stores nicely in my MSR Titan kettle.

Perfect Simplicity

Written on May 05, 2014

This is perfect for me because I mostly eat from dehydrated food pouches when backpacking, so all I need is something to boil 16-oz of water and to use as a mug. I much prefer the short/wide shape of the Titan because there's more bottom surface area for the stove's flame to heat plus its more stable on top of the stove.

Hot Tip

Written on May 05, 2014

I use these with my BD Trail Ergo Cork poles when I'm in rocky areas.

There is a metal insert in the rubber for the metal tip of the poles to seat into. This keeps the pole from pushing all the way through the rubber.

Good Replacement

Written on May 05, 2014

The original shock cords in the poles of my 15 year old Marmot Eclipse tent had lost all their elasticity. This was the same diameter as the factory shock cord and made my poles work just like new.

Lots of Lumens

Written on May 05, 2014

I got this as an upgrade to my old Petzl Tactikka Plus. I was concerned the slightly higher weight would be uncomfortable, but found it not to be an issue. I like being able to use Sanyo Eneloops (when the outer wrap is peeled away as others have mentioned) and like being able to recharge without removing the batteries (a pain on the Tactikka). I also like being able to use the spot LED when hikin

Better than Stock Stakes

Written on May 05, 2014

I got these to replace the stakes that came with one of my tents. I like the mini groundhogs because they're much lighter and seem very strong. I appreciate the red color which helps finding the stakes easier when setting up my tent at night. The attached loop is handy for pulling the stakes out of the ground (but don't seem reflective). These also make excellent Christmas tree ornaments!
