Best Climbing Fleece

Written on Mar 29, 2017

I was pitting this against the Patagonia R1, Arc'teryx Konseal, and Arc'teryx Fortrez(none else were worth considering in my opinion). I ended up trying them all on and finding out that this was the only fleece that the hem did not ride up when reaching above my head. The previous reviewer is really correct about the tight fit, which I love. I am 6' 2" and 190 lbs, which it fits very snug. The thing I like about the fit is that the arms are narrow, not just the body. If you are a body builder...this jacket might not be for you.

Great Jacket

Fits the need. I use it for biking because of long length of sleeves due to being a climbing shell. I have also used it for climbing. Stays put, great for light weather protection.

Impressed

Great down jacket. Was my first one I got. I really like the jacket vs hoody, since I use this specifically for skiing underneath my ski shell. I used it for everything during the first year, camping, hiking, backpacking, climbing, and skiing. Needless to say, I wore it out pretty effectively in about 1 1/2 years. I have patched it quite a bit, and it still works pretty great! Overall impressed.

Favorite cool weather jacket

Written on Mar 24, 2017

I am actually wearing mine right now. I think the biggest strength of this jacket is comfort. It is super comfortable, it fits loose, but not baggy. I am 6' 1" 190 lbs and wear a medium. Great fit. I love the stretch on the wrists, wish more jackets had this. Used it for climbing, skiing, xc skiing, and backpacking. Great for all activities, never feel clammy in it. The only thing I could say is that it does not pack down into a stuff sack or it's own pocket. The way the advise is packing it into the sleeve, which works fine for stuffing in a pack, but not so well if you would take off climbing(but it breathes so well, you probably wouldn't need to).

Great hiking/climbing shoe mix

Written on Mar 22, 2017

Real quick for sizing, I usually wear a 10 1/2 in Vasque, and most other shoe brands. I got these in a 10 and I would say that if you are going for a snug fit for more climbing geared, definitely size 1/2 down. If you are only using for hiking, probably get street size. I would be hard pressed to call these climbing specific. They are a good mix of a light hiker with some approach shoe flavors. They have a really grippy sole, the front rand, and a "climbing zone" on the front of the sole. I have honestly not used them for any climbing intensive activities, but have used them on rock. The grip seems adequate. For hiking, two problems I found: 1. The tab on the bootie is sewn on the indie of the bootie, creating a spot where it can rub on your Achilles tendon. The first time I took these out with thin socks I got two large blisters. I learned I had to wear very specific socks that have more substance in that area. 2. Where the shoe folds when taking a step, like this _/ the area where it bends can potentially dig into your foot, which it does on one of the shoes occasionally and is rather uncomfortable when taking repeated steps(like you do in hiking). I think the strength of these are short hikes with technical features where you need reliable waterproofing. I used them for a couple overnighters, which rocked because of the removable bootie. It is great for drying shoes faster, keeping rocks out of your shoe, and makes an awesome camp shoe which I use everytime I use these sho

Most comfortable boot I have ever owned

Written on Mar 22, 2017

I wanted to get this boot for a couple reasons. 1. You could remove bootie and go through stream crossings with the main body of boot(found out this has mesh padding around the ankle, so it gets wet if you do this, it would not happen on the non-leather version). 2. Have a camp shoe once you get to camp. I have used both these features and love each of them, but pointed out why the non-leather might be better for option 1. However, the thing that blew me away was how comfortable they are. I have owned Hi-Tec boots, multiple pairs of Vasque's(which fit me pretty well), and Aku. I have enjoyed most of my vasque's for fit, but the break in time for my Vasque Wasatch was ridiculous(I got them back in 2010, and just now are they feeling truly broken in). These however felt broken in the first time I used them, and by far are my most favorite boot. The only complaints I could give about them are: 1. When you tighten them to get going, the way they are designed with the bootie, you will loosen the fit a little bit, so needing readjustment most times when headed down the trail. 2. There seems to be not the typical amount of padding underneath the heel of the foot. I have talked to somebody else who has them and noticed the same thing, I don't know if it just gets packed out faster or if it is different material then most. It really isn't noticeable unless you have a 45+ lbs pack or hike for extended durations, like 8+ miles. But, the tradeoffs far outweigh the alternatives.

Solid and Long Lasting

Written on Mar 22, 2017

I was in the market for trail runners and somebody said this was their fastpacking goto shoe, so I figured I would give it a try. I have the previous model that has the eyelets detached on strings from the main upper of the shoe, which one broke, but was warrantied just fine. They have lasted many years with moderate use(I know the EVA is probably packed out, but, oh well). Traction is great, super comfy!

Plush and light

Written on Mar 17, 2017

Bought this specifically for alpine climbing because of light-weight-ness. I might or might not have taken it out for sport climbing a couple times. Took a real big falls on it, but didn't realize it since my belayer was awesome, but also because of the catch. The softest catch I've had on a rope. Love that it's light and small, great for it's function. Durable thus far!

Durable and Functional

I have had these as my alpine draw runners for some time now. They stand up to abrasion really well and have instilled confidence. Great price, great product.

Specialized

All I wanna say is this is a life saver when bringing up seconds, especially two of them. Like other reviewers have said, be careful to set up properly and be careful about inversion. Just climb smart and you will be good. Five stars because it does what it is intended to perfectly.
