I've been a Merrill user for a long time. Sadly, the trimming of corners (to save money?) has put them out of the running with me. The Moab vent 2 is a nice shoe, but Merrill has made the finger loop so small, it's a vestige. By that, I mean it's no longer functional. I can barely get one finger in it. And, this change is across the board on all shoe/boot models. An extremely popular (Desert Storm) Chameleon Stretch boot has been ruined with every new generation. Loved that boot. Ordered a new pair, and couldn't even recognize them, and I couldn't get a foot into them. Now, I shop elsewhere.

Bought these for my first backpacking trip. I have yet to use them but I think they will work. They are on the heavy side of shoes but with weight comes durability and I am excited to see how these hold up. I think this is a good shoe for most beginners like myself that cannot stand hiking in boots, but these seem to be almost like a boot in terms of the structure of the shoe if that makes sense.
Pros:
Comfortable out of the box
seem very durable
Good beginner shoe
Cons:
on the heavy side but not a problem unless you want a light shoe.
Best Used for:
General hiking
Short backpacking trips
Would recommend: Yes

very comfortable, size and extra width exactly as expected.
Just enough firmness in the inside to not feel sloppy but still feels good.
The sole is grippy, just as expected and advertised.
I would recommend this product.
I have yet to try rock climbing with them though :)
Pros:
Just as advertised
Cons:
None so far
Would recommend: Yes

Something changed at Merrill. Their shoes & boots used to be very well thought out. For the past several years quality has plummeted. It's as if they put designs into production without any field testing. Here are the issues; first in general: sizing is inconsistent. I've received a pair where one shoe fit and the other was to small. The finger loops for pulling the boots on have gotten so small, I cannot get one finger into it. I get the idea Merrill thought no one would notice. Wake up Merrill! People still use them and need them. Then there is the design change in the Chamileon stretch. Whoever thay had do the redesign must have been ordered to cut costs. I ordered a pair because I loved the gen. 2 model I had. The 5th generation was unrecognizable. This is a stretch shoe, you have to pull it on, and yet the finger loop was only a vestige. The pull loop was non functional. The shoe opening was impossible to stretch open wide enough to get a foot into because they no longer put the elastic in the material like the old ones had. It seems apparent that Merrill went on a cost cutting binge or went to a completely new Chinese mfg, maybe both. So, sad, as I over time have bought over 11 pairs of Merrill's. Not any more.
Pros:
Years ago, they made a quality shoe.
Cons:
Cheap, non functional, sizing not accurate.
Best Used for:
Stoking a fire.
