I always wanted one.

I've had my eye on a grigri for quite some time. Always thought it was too much money, but would be great to add to the kit. Got a good deal here and used it for the first time this past weekend. Now I know why I wanted one. It held a new rope much better than my other belay devices. Later one evening, I was playing around with a cross beam and some ascenders to see how it would perform as a capture device while heading up, then descending. Worked like a charm.

Works great

Shipped on time - the GriGri 2 is tested product, I've used others a lot and it works well. So far no problems with this one obviously. I have multiple ATCs and a Trango Cinch. This is a little easier for new belayers to use than the Cinch and more idiot-proof than the ATCs.

Excellent belay device, even for a newbie

My wife and I recently started climbing. The class we took at our local gym was awesome and a great first step into this fun sport. The belay device the instructor used was a basic ATC belay device. Nothing fancy.

After speaking to a few of our friends who are avid rock climbers (professional and sponsored)...they both suggested the GriGri 2.

After only 2 climbs so far, we love the device. Especially, the assisted braking. While we haven't climbed with it a ton, we are already loving the purchase.
Pros:
  • Wife loves the color
  • Assisted braking
  • Fool proof
  • Easy to use for beginners
Cons:
  • Maybe price but you get what you pay for
Best Used for:
  • Beginners and more advanced

Petzl GriGri 2

Excellent product, a well engineered and well thought out belay device. I've been teaching my four year old daughter how to belay on our backyard climbing wall using the same progression I was taught eons ago (waist, figure eight, then ATC), we introduced the GriGri when she started to get comfortable with the other methods and for added safety when she started to actually belay others (with close supervision). Aside from being a great teaching tool, it has been a standard piece in my rack for years - not entirely necessary, but provides great piece of mind while climbing. In addition to the fun stuff - I use mine routinely while up in a tree trimming branches and while on my steep roof cleaning gutters and clearing snow. Can't go wrong with this piece of equipment.

Love the safety of a Gri-gri

I love the security of the gri-gri. I'm teaching my daughter how to lead belay, and it's nice knowing she'll have the back-up of the locking cam no matter what.
